Baragung

Baragung is a support system of the Babaran Segaragunung Culture House. This enterprise helps to fund the culture house’s educational programs focused on cultural regeneration for youth. The methodology of this program uses batik as its educational medium to yield, we believe, an understanding of cultural values taught through batik’s visual representations and creative process which are rooted in Indonesian cultural heritage. Our goal is to create a space for growth and understanding without sacrificing the cultural knowledge of this ancient technique while expressing it within a contemporary framework. There is a need for such a space to hold a sustainable ecosystem honoring nature and crafts so that cultural wisdom may be a compass in explorations of art in the Indonesian context. Such a space is intended to enhance creativity not only with respect to the evolution of aesthetics but also the local wisdom that enriches its contemporary expression.

Founded in 2005, the Babaran Segaragunung Culture House has been involved in supporting activities which explore batik’s cultural roots. Such intangible aspects are often left out of the picture amongst the rapidly growing instant culture. In 2018, in order to further support these important issues and to create a larger impact with a wider audience, Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam, and their son, Desmond Anabrang, decided to create the label Baragung. As a social enterprise, Baragung supports the cultural and art ventures of Babaran Segaragunung Culture House. Baragung works together with Brahma Tirta Sari Batik Studio to create their one of a kind batik pieces to whisper the knowledge that has been given to us by our ancestors.
